Who We Are?

Embibo Gender Initiative (EGI) is a grassroots rural gender equity movement

Based in South Western Uganda, we work with women and girls marginalised by gender-based violence, HIV, and the intersecting inequalities that limit their safety, health, and opportunities. We are rooted in rural communities and driven by feminist values. EGI stands alongside those most affected to create meaningful, lasting change.

Mission Statement:

To empower rural communities in Uganda by building their capacity to prevent gender-based violence and address social and sexual health challenges affecting women and girls.

Vision Statement:

A just and inclusive society where rural women, girls, and youth enjoy equal opportunities, free from gender-based violence and sexual health inequalities.

EGI advances this vision through advocacy, community capacity building, and direct service provision for survivors of sexual and domestic violence belonging to socially excluded groups. Through these interventions, we work to shift harmful norms, strengthen local leadership, and build safer, more empowered communities.

Core Values/ Tenets of Beliefs:

Love and Care: We honour rest, healing, and safety, recognising the emotional labour of feminist work and creating spaces free from harm and re-traumatisation.

Equity and Equality: We value lived experience, acknowledge privilege, and ensure inclusive, non-discriminatory access to support and information.

Transparency and Accountability: We stay accountable to our communities through open dialogue, shared decision-making, and responsible resource use.

Justice and Fairness: We prioritise survivor needs, healing, and dignity beyond institutional definitions of justice.

Transformative Approaches: We challenge harmful norms, confront power dynamics, and recognise violence as systemic.

Meaningful Partnerships: We collaborate with aligned individuals and organisations to strengthen collective impact.

Growth: We embrace continuous learning, evolution, and transformation to drive lasting change.
